Invite your family and friends to a fall recital of organ music on Sunday, November 16, 3:00 p.m., here at First Church. Our own Dr. Paul Kaatrud, Music Director, will play. Dr. Kaatrud is a Fellow in the American Guild of Organists, and has a Masters degree in Organ Performance from Northwestern University.
The organ at First Church was built by the Austin Organ Company of Hartford, Connecticut, and installed in 1963. It is one of the largest pipe organs on the South Shore, with 47 ranks (sets) of pipes and 2,742 individual pipes. This year saw a major repair and refurbishing of the organ by the Outerbridge Organ Company of Beverly, MA.
The instrument is a fine example of the American Classic organ, which has a broad variety of tonal colors that facilitates a wide range of musical styles. The recital will demonstrate this versatility with works from three centuries, including the music of three German masters, Bach, Mendelssohn, and Brahms; Franck, the French romanticist; two 20th century British composers; and three contemporary settings of African-American spirituals.
The recital is free and open to the public with an opportunity to donate to the Organ Fund.
